Home / School Life / Extended Day

Before and after the work cycle.

Care from 7:30 in the morning to 6:00 in the evening, staffed by people children already know, arranged so the extra hours feel like the school rather than a holding room.

Who staffs it

The same adults, not a separate crew.

Extended Day is staffed by our own assistants and specialists on a rotation, which means a child at 5:30 in the evening is with someone who was in their classroom at 10:00 in the morning. It costs more to run this way and it is the single thing families mention most.

The room is a classroom, not a gym. Materials are available, the garden is open until dusk, and there is a long table for homework in the Elementary years — though we send very little of it.

Enrichment clubs

Four clubs a term, chosen by the children.

Clubs run from 3:30 to 4:45 and are proposed each term — sometimes by staff, sometimes by Upper Elementary students who want to teach something. Recent terms have included chess, printmaking, a cooking club that supplies Friday snack, and a bicycle maintenance club run with a shop on Halsted.

Clubs are included in the Extended Day fee rather than charged separately, which keeps the sign-up sheet from sorting children by what their family can afford.
